Under The Power 锦衣之下 Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Ever since Jin Xia was young, she already had made herself famous for the things she did. When her name was mentioned, she was often nicknamed with names like yaksha and big bugs. She was very uncomfortable when she first heard it. Later, she accidentally read a book on yaksha, and learnt that it is a creature that everyone is afraid of. It went up the mountain and became a gatekeeper for spirits, drinking and eating ferociously. She was fascinated by it and treated that the nickname is a compliment.

After she became a constable in Department Six, her nicknames are gradually forgotten in the neighborhood. Everyone would know her upon mentioning the fierce girl with a pretty face in the Yuan family. Madam Yuan Chen couldn't hold back her daughter, and Jin Xia got older and older every day but no one came to them to propose and this made Madam Yuan Chen very upset. She will think with gritted teeth: Wait for me to prepare a big dowry, and I will not worry even if you don't come to me begging!

In order to save up for the dowry, Madam Yuan Chen sold beancurd every morning and dried tofu every night, which was difficult. Jin Xia was burdened by her nicknames. And because no one has come to her for a marriage proposal, she couldn’t speak for herself and only tried to catch thieves desperately.

When Jin Xia heard that Madam Yuan actually wanted to matchmake her and Mr. Yi's third son, her first reaction Jin Xia had was to wonder how much dowry her mother had offered to Mr Yi to make this matchmaking possible.

She turned her thought around, if she is married to the Yi family, it would also save a lot of trouble: Yuan Yi’s private schooling fees would be saved up for the next few years, as well as the charcoal gifts they had to give to the Teacher Yi to show appreciation could also be saved. Those costs will actually sum up to a great amount.

Those expenses can eventually be saved up to the price of the dowry.

She knocked on her forehead, anxiously looking at the crackling wood sticks burning in the stove, and stuffed a few more wood sticks in.

The lantern was lit. The water in the Jinshui River flowed slowly, reflecting the countless bright lights from the shores of both sides of the river.

On the river, there were musical boats where one can enjoy music and paintings and other boat performers. Shirtless man with flowers on their head will immediately smile and acknowledge, as they climb up the bamboo pole on the boat, then dive down into the river. Before they hit the water, they would do flips and spins as a performance to entertain the viewers on the shore.

There are taller and shorter restaurant buildings on the shore across each other, and the small bridge that connected the two shores next to the river had small stores on them, selling different items.

Jin Xia leaned against the small stone lion statue on the bridge railing, guarded the small stall selling dried bean curds, listening to the sound of bamboo flute and pipa coming from the restaurant next door, and her eyes looked down on the river. She was here to help her mother tonight, but her mother probably caught a cold last night, and was having a headache. Jin Xia persuaded her to go home to rest, but Madam Yuan Chen felt uneasy to let Jin Xia take care of the stall alone. Jin Xia made promises to safeguard the store properly and would behave. Madam Yuan Chen repeatedly reiterated her instructions before going home to rest

"Two strings of dried tofu with spicy oil!" said a voice with a happy tone.

Jin Xia was startled and looked up. It was Yang Yue and Jin Xia asked: "How did you know I was here?"

"I just delivered two pickled fish to your house, and I met your mother. So I gave her your business trip subsidy to her. She told me that you are here." Yang Yue prinkled the dried tofu sticks with spicy oil, "My dad wants us to go with him to the military headquarters tomorrow morning."

"Oh," responded Jin Xia, "anything went missing there?"

"Who knows." Yang Yue followed her gaze and looked at the river, curiously, "what are you looking at?"

"Did you see that diver juggling?" Jin Xia pointed.

As she says, the shirtless man jumped off from the tall pole with a beautiful backflip in the air, before plopping into the water... It was springtime and the weather was cold. Though the river surface was yet to be frozen, the coldness of the water in the river would still bite the skin.Yang Yue could not help feeling a shiver down his spine looking at the performers diving into the cold river.

"I sold three bowls of dried bean curd, he jumped eight times." Jin Xia looked at the shirtless man who climbed back onto the boat with envy. "The money he earns a night equals our monthly salary, why are we even working as constables?"

"Aren't you scared of the cold if you work like them?"

"Isn’t the silver worth the coldness?"

Jin Xia looked down at her bucket of dried bean curds. She didn't know when she would finish selling them. She sighed.

"Are you short of money again?" Yang Yue knew her well.

Before Jin Xia could answer, someone appeared before the stall—
"I want four bowls of dried beans, two of them with spicy sauce, two with plum powder, the sourer, the better. My wife craves something sour now." It was Sun Jixing, the eldest son of Sun's family, who came to visit the night market with his wife.

Although she was very reluctant to look at them, for the sake of money, she quickly prepared the dried bean curds and handed it over, without expressions. "Four copper plates, thank you."

Under The Power 锦衣之下 Chapter 7

Chapter 7

Looking at the window of her mother’s room, Jin Xia sighed in her heart, and then took out the bag of sugar from her pocket and handed it to Yuan Yi.

Yuan Yi opened it and complained, "I have grown up, how can you still treat me as a kid, sister?"

"Oh well" she stretched out a hand, "I will keep it for myself."

Yuan Yi quickly placed one candy into his mouth, and put the rest of the bag into his pocket.

"Leader Yang said that you went to Department Six to look for me a few times. What happened?" asked him Jin Xia.

Yuan Yi whispered, "mother wanted me to ask when you will come back."

"Is our family running short of money?"

"Dong Dadu, the one who collects renting fees, his son is getting married soon and mother said she must send a gift to them."

That surprised Jin Xia: "I remember his son married last year, how can he still get married?"

"He has four sons."

"..."

Jin Xia sighed helplessly, and suddenly thought of the stack of silver tickets that Cao Ge gave her and became more melancholy.

"Xia'er (An intimate way of calling Jin Xia), are you back?"

“Yes mother." Stepping into the room, Jin Xia saw Madam Yuan Chen's (Yuan was her husband's last name. Chen was her last name) getting up, "Mother, did I wake you up."

"It's okay, I should have gotten up." Madam Yuan Chen put on her grey-brown coat and looked at Jin Xia. "How was the trip? Didn't you get hurt?"

"No! Of course not." Laughed Jin Xia.

"Were the criminals caught??"

"Yes..." Jin Xia said softly.

Madam Yuan Chen's face was overjoyed, and her hand stretched out towards her immediately: "You said that those criminals were important, just in time, I can use it to buy a gift for Dong's family. ."

He said Jin Xia: "No... I didn't get the money. They were brought away to the North Town Protection Department as soon as we got back."

Yuan Chen was stunned for a moment, then said: "The North Town Protection Department should also give you money, you are the one who caught them!"

"That's right, but who can dare to ask the Embroidered Uniform Guard for reward." Jin Xia did not dare to look at her mother, lowering her head.

After listening to this, Yuan Chen stunned for a while before frowning: "Okay, go wash and change your clothes. These clothes are almost rancid. I have already told you, why would a girl want to be a constable? It’s hard and tiring. If you and your father were willing to listen to me, to marry you to the Sun family in the Northern streets of the city who makes pastries, at least our families can help each other. Though in the previous year, the Sun family fell was not rich, this year the Sun family made a fortune out of their peach blossoms buns. They also bought a shop in Xinfeng Bridge. If you were married to his family, you might live a great life now. Look. Do you know that Sun Jixing's (Son of the Sun family) wife is already pregnant..."

Jin Xia was so used to her mother’s naggings. She nodded and went to the kitchen to boil some water. Yuan Yi quietly made a face at her and followed.

"Sister, there is something else..." Yuan Yi followed into the stove and helped her scoop the water, with a mysterious look on her face, "Don't blame me for not telling you. Mother went to see matchmaker Wang."

Upon hearing this, Jin Xia raised her eyebrows lightly, staring at Yuan Yi with vigilance.

"I squatted under the window and listened for a while to get this news for you. I think our mother wanted you to match Mr. Yi's third son."

Frightened, Jin Xia raised her eyebrows even higher: "Mr. Yi?! Isn’t that... your teacher?"

Yuan Yi nodded.

Mr. Yi is the teacher of Yuan Yi's private school. The three sons in the family are all scholars. How could such a person fall in love with her?

Under The Power 锦衣之下 Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Tong Yu dragged Cao Ge angrily and Qi Qiu too, because she fled with Cao Ge and was regarded as an accomplice.

Jin Xia followed for a few steps, and watched them disappear behind the gates. She vaguely saw people in red uniforms with big fishes sewn on them. They are the Embroidered Uniform Guards. Sure enough, once she reached the city, the Embroidered Uniform Guards had already received the message. There must be someone spying on them when they enter the capital.

She gritted her teeth resentfully and watched Tong Yu hand over the two to the Embroidered Uniform Guards. The Embroidered Uniform Guards’ commander was facing away from her. She could only see him standing tall but could not see his face, but she clearly saw Tong Yu flattering him.

Jin Xia turned away dejectedly and glanced angrily at Yang Chengwan: "Leader, why do you allow him to do that. Who do you think he is working for? Everyone knows he is trying to please the Embroidered Uniform Guards."

Yang Yue sighed: "At least he was right, if we offended the Embroidered Uniform Guards. everyone will not have a good life."

Jin Xia sighed, "A criminal department is sufficient. Why is there a need for an Embroidered Uniform Guard to hinder and interfere with catching criminals. Then what for we have the criminal departement? It becomes useless!"

Yang Yue was about to cover her mouth in a hurry but Jin Xia docked away.

"My lord, you need to stop! This can't be heard." Yang Yue gave a knock on her head.

"Now the offender has been taken away by him before he enters the trial. Did we did all this work for nothing?!" Jin Xia was disappointed. "We were originally told that if we caught Cao Ge, there will be rewards. If we know that we did this for nothing, we would have saved our energy to do other things!”

Yang Chengwan said lightly: "It's okay as long as you came back safely. Your brother came and asked to see you several times. Go back and see your family."

Jin Xia was really worried about her family, and learning that his brother came to find her several times, she wondered if something happened at home. Jin Xia looked at Yang Yue and said: "Forget about the rewards, but Yang Yue, you must go and get our trip subsidies back. This is a big deal. Don't mess it up."

Yang Yue nodded.

Jin Xia hurried back.

It was spring, the trees were green, the capital city was crowded, and the market was bustling. There were a lot of shops on both sides of the road. The noodle shop sells plain noodles, water-boiled noodles, and all kinds of noodles. The pastry shop has steamed buns, oil cakes and desserts. The more refined pastry shops include marble cakes and tofu crisps and peach blossom dimsums. Jin Xia smelled the blended scent of various foods and walked briskly in the crowd.

When passing by the confectionery shop, her steps stopped. She figured out how much money she had left. After hesitating, she took out three copper pennies and bought a small packet of sweets and placed it into her pocket.

Walking past the lively market, she turned into a deep alley. The first half of the alley was like a gourd with a crooked mouth. The entrance of the alley was as narrow and small as the mouth of the gourd. After passing the narrow path, she reached a broader alley.

Jin Xia, I walked to a mottled wooden door on the east side of the alley. She pushed it and knocked.

After a moment , the door creaked open, and a young man with newly grown hair and brown round collared clothes smiled at her: "Sister! You are back!" He is the younger brother of Jin Xia, called Yuan Yi.

Jin Xia reached out and stroked his short hair above his forehead. He walked inward and asked, "Did anyone bully you recently?" In the small yard, a stone mill was entrenched on the west, and there was a vinegar pot at the corner. There’s a sauce jar next to it, the beany smell was unable to disperse.

"No, since you warned the three kids, they no longer dared to tear my book." Yuan Yi followed her in.

Looking at her younger brother, who was weak but timid, she sighed. At his age, Jin Xia was already the child king of Quanxi Feng Street. She goes into fights with whoever she did not like. However, she was often beaten by her father and mother because she was fighting outside.

It's a pity that this man's glorious era of her childhood has ended, and the days after that… She sighed rather melancholy and asked: "Father and mother are not back yet?"

Yuan Yi made a shush gesture and pointed his finger at the room, lowering his voice: "Daddy went to sell tofu, and the mother fell asleep inside. Last night she went to Xinfeng bridge to sell braised dried bean curd, and she came back very late. "

Under The Power 锦衣之下 Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Two days later, Jin Xia and Yang Yue escorted Cao Ge and Qi Qiu back to Beijing before they entered the Department Six. They wanted to hand over the criminals to the prison of the National Defense Department. They met Tong Yu on the way. Tong Yu has been a constable for five years, but he is a man who is accustomed to flattering his boss. He has no achievements in those five years.

"You guys are finally back! You took five full days to arrest two criminals. How can you be lazy all day long when you are so young?" Tong Yu shook his head in dissatisfaction. "This is Cao Ge and Qi Qiu?"

"Yes."

Jin Xia didn't like him, but she forced herself to pull a polite smile, and then dragged Cao Ge away.

It is a pity that Tong Yu wants to make his presence felt.
He reached out a hand to block her way and said, "just hand me over to me. Cao Ge is also involved in another case of conspiracy against the enemy. He must be sent to the North Town Protection Department for interrogation. You just came back so I will escort him over for you."

Hearing the words "North Town Protection Department," Cao Ge was so scared that he trembled and wanted to find a place to hide. "No no...no no...I don't want to go to that place..."

North Town Protection Department was under Embroidered Uniform Guards Guards and is Embroidered Uniform Guards’ Prison. Even the prison of the Criminal Department is like heaven as compared to the Embroidered Uniform Guards’ prison. As soon as one enters the prison, he will be tortured with poison and caning. The criminals are treated cruelly and tortured to their last breath.

Seeing Tong Yu reaching out to pull Cao Ge, Jin Xia was pissed.

According to her temperament from the past, she would have kicked Tong Ge until he fell three meters away from her. But in the past two years, she started working for the officials, and she knows that she should not infuriate officials ranked higher than herself. Though two silver pennies per month was not a lot, it is better than nothing.

She shoved Tong Yu’s hand away and dragged Cao Ge behind her with one hand. She barely smiled, "Sir Tong, Me and Dayang pulled all-nighters to chase after them and put sweat and tears on the horses’ back before catching them. It ain’t fair for us to give him to you when we haven’t even brought him to the Official Criminal Department right?”

Tong Yu looked angry, "Let me tell you, this is the Embroidered Uniform Guards’ dignitaries, if you deliberately delay me, you will be treated as accomplices, do you want that?!"

"It's not appropriate for you to say that. We worked hard to do our jobs. We finally caught these two people and brought them back after days of hard work. And now you say we will be treated as accomplices." Jin Xia laughed dryly. She was holding her temper, so low that she felt she was suffocating.

It's a pity that Tong Yu didn't get her feeling at all.

“Stop arguing, quickly give me Cao Ge."

"You……"

Seeing that Jin Xia is about to explode, Yang Yue quickly came up and said: "Sir Tong, Cao Ge committed a murder case and was just arrested. He has not gone for trials, it is better to wait until the case is convicted before giving the person to you." He has a calmer temperament than Jin Xia. He knows that Tong Yu is cunning and has a small heart. if you offend him it is inevitable that he will secretly take revenge.

"So what? The Embroidered Uniform Guards wants him without delay. Stop arguing, otherwise, you will offend them and everyone will not have a good life."

As he was saying, Yang Chengwan, the Department Six’s commander, limped in with a big knife swaying around his waist. Yang Yue hurriedly came forward and called, "Dad."

In front of Yang Chengwan, Jin Xia quickly bowed to him respectfully and said, "Leader."

"Sir Tong!" Yang Cheng Wanxian greeted Tong Yu, "what do you need?"

Although Tong Yu has the same rank as Yang Chengwan, he always feels that Yang Chengwan being the leader is a shameful thing for Department Six as he is lame. "These two people are suspected of betraying the country. I’m about to send them over to the Embroidered Uniform Guards’ and your officers are delaying it..."

Jin Xia interrupted anxiously: "We brought them back."

Yang Chengwan raised his hand to stop Jin Xia, and said lightly: "I saw the Embroidered Uniform Guards waiting outside, quickly hand them to Sir Tong."

"Leader!" Jin Xia was indignant.

"Quick."

Jin Xia did not dare to defy Yang Chengwan. She backed away.

Under The Power 锦衣之下 Chapter 2

Chapter 1.2

The man with the little hat snorted coldly and sighed: "Although the maid resembles you, she’s a virgin. The nuances are very different and do you think I can’t tell?

Cao Ge took out a few silver tickets[something like cash], twenty-one and fifty-two, and slowly put them on the table with trembling hands.

"These silvers are more than ten times more than the rewards, so please ask the official to let us go." He looked at him with begging eyes.

Seeing a stack of silver tickets, the little hat man’s eyes glowed, and he reached for the silver ticket and counted it twice, back and forth, and said with joy: "Three hundred and twenty-two!"

"Yes yes, please ask the official to keep it."

"How do you know that I'm short of money every month," the little hatted man said, "My brother's private school tuition should be paid again, and I bought a basket of charcoal to send to his teacher last month, making me penniless this month."

Cao Ge had just raised a ray of hope in his heart, but he saw that the little hatted man’s face was replaced with a melancholy look.

"I'm worried that if this matter spreads, I can't even keep my job. But I shouldn’t kill both of you to make sure no one knows I got bribed by you."

Cao Ge and his wife were shocked at the same time, their faces pale as paper.

The man with the little hat tilted his head, seriously thinking about the possibility of this matter, hesitantly said: "...Right?"

Seeing that there was no room for turning around, Cao Ge no longer hesitated, he was sitting at the window, taking advantage of the man with the little hat, still standing, he stood up, turned over the railing, and stepped on the tiles on the windowpane, strode forward ready to jump down...

"Cao[Last name] Lang [A word to call your husband. Direct translates to Husband Cao]!" Qi Qiu cried anxiously when he saw Cao Ge escaping for his own life.

Before Qi QIu’s words were heard, Cao Ge jumped down from the window without turning back.

The man with the little hat didn't worry at all. He continued to eat the food. He looked up and saw Qi Qiu's face. He shook his head and sighed, "You murdered your relatives to elope with Cao Ge. But it seems like he cared more for himself."

Qiqiu sat stunned, without saying a word.

Footsteps rang at the stairs. It wasn’t the Xiaoer, it was a tall man with Cao Ge limping beside him. Cao Ge probably slammed his feet or twisted his legs when he jumped down.

"Jin Xia, next time when you throw people down, please tell me in advance!" The big man lifted Cao Ge, and said to the man with the little hat.

"I didn't throw him down this time, really. He jumped down on his own." The man with the little hat tidied the dishes on the table with his chopsticks. "You are hungry, come and eat."

It happened that Xiaoer was trembling when he brought up six bowls of rice, and the man with the little hat handed over two bowls to the big man, left two bowls for himself, and then put a bowl of rice in front of Cao Ge and his wife. Using chopsticks, he urged: "Hurry up! From here, we have to take a couple of days to go back to Beijing. If you don’t eat now, no one can help you when you're hungry on our journey back."

Cao Ge's legs hurt and he yelled in pain. Qi Qiu's act as if she didn't hear it and started eating as her heart was hurt by him.

"This simmered saury... it was made by first scraping the fillet with a sharp knife, and then picking out the smaller bones." The big man picked a piece of the fish and chewed a few times. It is made with sausages and chicken soup but the fragrance of those actually overpowered the fish. In fact, the swordfish itself is already very delicious, as long as it is brewed with honey wine with clear sauce, and steamed."

He talked for a while, and the man with the little hat has eaten seven or eight more mouthfuls of rice. He said: "Look at you...you should be a cook instead of a constable."

"I think so too, but it's a pity that my dad..." The big man sighed, took the tofu, and then sighed again, "Tofu should be soaked in water from the well three times, and the bean curd should be removed. This tofu was soaked at most twice. How can this be served? And these fried bamboo shoots..."

He started talking about his food reviews while the man with the little hat finished his meal, and asked the shop's Xiaoer for some tea, and some water to wash his face.

"They have two huge carriages. Let's use their carriages. We can avoid eating dirt while riding on the horse backs." The man with the little hat hat carried a wet cloth towel. "I have been on the horseback for the past three days, and I feel so worned out. "

He wiped the cheeks to reveal the fair and pink skin. He took off the tight little hat, took out the wooden comb from his sleeve pocket, dipped it in water, and combed her hair, and braided it into a braid.

"You... are you a girl?" Qi Qiu froze, thinking that she was just an exceptionally handsome boy.

The girl who just revealed her gender raised an eyebrow: "Why not?"

"No, no, it doesn't mean that, but I didn't expect that there were girls in the Department Six."

"Fuss."

She snorted, her real name is Yuan Jinxia, eighteen years old, two years ago, she entered Department Six due to a coincidence; her peer is called Yang Yue, and she was two years older. Both of them were on duty in the Department Six of the capital.

After simple grooming, the wooden comb was put away, and Jin Xia sat idle, I looked at the silver tickets with sadness, sighed... and then sighed again, until Yang Yue's felt goosebumps on himself.

She quietly said: "Dayang..." [Direct translated to Big Yang, as Yang was Yang Yue’s last name]

Yang Yue swiftly took over the silver ticket and placed it into his pockets: "Let me keep it here, and later register them at the department head."

Jin Xia looked at him weeping softly, trying to grab for the silver: "I have a mother of 80 and..."

"Your mother isn’t even forty, be careful of her breaking your legs if she hears you say this." Yang Yue didn't even look at her.

Jin Xia said in confidence: "My mother is very understanding, knowing that I am undertaking this job and giving my sweat and tears for this job to earn money, let alone eighty, she will allow me to say she is eight thousand years old”

Yang Yue nodded: "Your leg will be fine, but my father will break my leg. For the sake of my leg, I can only ask your eight-thousand-year-old mother to bear a thought for me and let me hand this silver up."

Yang Yue's father is Yang Chengwan, not only is he the head of the “Department Six”, but also Yang Yue’s and Jin Xia’s superior. Jin Xia’s Kung fu, as well as tracking skills, were all taught by Yang Chengwan. For Jin Xia, Yang Cheng Wan is like a master and father to her and his commands are undefiable.
